{"id":9,"date":"2012-04-18T16:29:05","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T14:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theband.at\/?p=9"},"modified":"2012-06-12T09:41:19","modified_gmt":"2012-06-12T07:41:19","slug":"long-tail-dead-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dubidu.io\/?p=9","title":{"rendered":"long tail &#8211; dead end"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday I had a very interesting conversation with Christian Pirkner, who told me that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\" title=\"AMZN\">Amazon<\/a>\u00a0actually doesn&#8217;t reference it&#8217;s long tail as part of its suggestion mechanism. In case any of you are not completely clear as to what I mean, I refer to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_tail_effect\" title=\"Long Tail Wiki\">long tail<\/a> as in the Blook by Malcom Gladwell, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/\">wired<\/a> magazines chief editor.<\/p>\n<p>Gladwell suggests that aggregator services like iTunes or Amazon\u00a0increase their revenue\u00a0as they sell ever more different items, because its customers know they can find almost everything.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the items on the long tail, how do they get found? It turns out that Amazon doesn&#8217;t help those at the\u00a0far end of the long tail to sell. It&#8217;s suggestion mechanism is based on actual shopping by prior customers.
